Concrete Staining: Acid Stains and Water Stains

Concrete staining is one of the staples of decorative concrete and can be the perfect finish to your own surface or flooring project. There are two types of concrete stains: acid stain and water stain. With acid stains, a combination of hydrochloric acid and metal salts are used to add pigment. When the acidic solution is applied, the top layers of concrete react and leave a permanent color that will not fade out from usual sources like UV light. Due to the inclusion of metal salts for pigmentation, the color palette of acid stains is limited to more earthy or neutral tones. In spite of this, applying an acid stain remains the standard concrete staining technique in the industry partly because it gives the classic marble look of stained concrete.

This is not to say that such a look cannot be achieved in any color using water staining. Since there is no acid like in an acid stain, no chemical reaction occurs however a skilled applicator, such as those from Concrete Cucamonga, can vary the water content of different coats which makes some more opaque than others. If done properly, the same marbled effect can be achieved with the added advantage of some level of personalization. Our skilled experts are more than happy to talk with you about what we can do to personalize your water stain.

Concrete Drawing, Logos and Writing

Aside from concrete staining, another popular decorative concrete choice is to add a drawing. This can be images, writing, a logo or even texturing concrete to give the appearance of another natural material like bricks or stone. To apply the drawing one of two techniques can be used: stenciling or concrete stamping. As with many things in this industry, the name describes exactly what each one is.

Concrete Stamping and Stencils

With stencils, disposable paper is set out over the areas not intended to receive paint or concrete texture. Once the desired coloring has been added, the paper can be removed, leaving just the drawing. As you can imagine, this works perfectly for all sorts of individual images or pieces of text however it can also be used to get that perfect stone driveway you dream of at a fraction of the price. Since stencils are just pre-cut paper, for repetitive patterns such as bricks or stone, huge areas can be covered incredibly efficiently and the whole concrete texturing process can be done far cheaper and faster than bricks or stone while achieving an indistinguishable end result.

For a slightly more durable drawing option, concrete stamping can be performed by our expert team instead. After being leveled, but before its fully set, the concrete is stamped with a rubber or metal imprint. A nice thing about concrete stamps as your choice of decorative concrete is they can also contain pigment or colored filler can be added after the concrete stamp to add more life to your design.

Alternatively, this technique can be used to give the appearance of stone or brick too by getting a mould of a real world brick or stone then using that to print the still setting concrete. While it's a little more time consuming, if you want to really personalise your texturing with a specific/individual outside world natural material then this is perfect for you!

Concrete Carving and Mold Casting

Another option, typically used on walls such as to style your concrete retaining wall, is carving. This can be letting the concrete set with predetermined holes, creating a beautiful pattern, or can be achieve as the concrete is setting by carving directly in to it. This second option is much like the technique used for stamping however it is done by hand instead, allowing us to write or draw a truly personalized finish for you.
